Can You Protect Your Children From Online Dangers?

Author: M. Coughlan

While there is no foolproof method of identifing online threats there are indications that an online pedophile is or has approached your child.

Keep in mind that while it may be easier to believe that the dirty old man that waits in the park is a pedophile, the truth is he is more likely to appear to be a respectable member of the community.

Here are some of the things to watch for, popular with both children and adults, they will often single out children that seem troubled, or distressed.

They will often have a good standing with the community in general, appearing to be trustworthy and reliable.

Even if they have no children in the home, they will often have games, video games, a rec room, computers, snacks, anything that a child would make them look "cool" (i'm sure the current term is not cool but you get the drift)they will appear to younger people to have all the neat stuff.

The pedophile will often date or marry women with children of their preferred age and type.

Often, they will be (but not always) male, masculine, better-educated, more religious than average, in their thirties, and choose jobs allowing them greater access to children.

They will often be married with no criminal record, and generally they don't believe that they are doing wrong, and won't admit to being an abuser even after being caught.

A pedophile will not stop on his own, and will not turn himself in, because he does not take responsibility for his behavior and denies that he's doing anything harmful. He will abuse until he's caught.

These offenders usually don't think they are doing anything wrong, and to make things worse often the young people involved don't know they are being groomed or manipulated by a pedophile, and often they are threatened into silence by these sexual abusers.
